Untitled Horror Poem

Last night I dreamt of severed heads
still alive
connected telepathically to their bodies
still bleeding from the bites of vampires
a direct result of my husband’s video choice
John Carpenter’s Vampires
of course John’s brilliant,
but I can’t handle it
the perfectly directed gore
the suspense of life and death
and in the next dream
I’m on a cliff looking out over the ocean
I feel close to the water
it’s safe to jump
but the cliff is rising
I’m not close to the water anymore
my reality drifting
I realize I don’t know myself
and don’t have the time to get started
everyday in and out of the tasks of motherhood
being married
not done with college
still rising over that water
wanting the waves to rescue me
and suddenly
awakened by tiny hands touching my face
“Mommy, Mommy, I wanna cuddle with you.”
We had stayed up ‘till two a.m. watching
the vampires bite
(except for the parts
when I put my hands over my eyes)
now the clock beamed red:
4:25
and all I could feel was love
pure crazy delusional
lucky love.
