AGENTS OF KARMA!

EPISODE 007: BLACK ROGERS

The young man standing before the dais looked to be another dreamer, another person with enough wild charisma to actually make a costume and join the world of somewhere outside the box of so-called normal reality, but best of all … he had a crazy cool helmet that looked like it was straight of out of …

“Did you say, ‘Buck Rogers’?”

“No, no, no – Black Rogers,” he said. “No joke. My name is Aswad Rogers. From Morocco and my given name translates to “black” in American. I tried to come up with a funny, you know, superhero-ish name, like “Mr. Doctor,” or “Agent Secret,” or even “Blackout” because of my power, but truthfully, my name speaks more to what I can do, much more so than my ethnicity or anything else.”

Dr. Atlantis had barely been listening. He couldn’t stop staring at Aswad’s metallic helmet.

“That headdress,” he said, “what does it do?”

Aswad smiled. “Yes, this is why I am here. I found this device in the Sahara. I cannot tell you where, but it is a thing of many wonders.”

Eddie sighed. “Do tell.”

“You,” said Black Rogers, “will like this a whole lot, Mr. Bones. This head covering blots out the sun or any other device that would shed light on your graveyard wanderings. I can bring the coolness of night against the brightest and harshest of daylights.”

Crossbones cleared his ghostly throat.

“Observe,” said the contestant. Then he shouted, “BLACKOUT!”

And the lights went out.

Despite backup generators and alternative Secret Society lighting sources – the room remained in total darkness.

“Um, okay,” said Devilgirl, “I don’t like this.”

“The dark can be disorienting,” said Black Rogers, “but also a welcome friend when you need peace from sun, or even better, to hide from your enemies, to move about secretly – or to strike without giving yourself away.”

“And,” said Atlantis, “void of light to see by, how do you function? Those goggles …”

“Yes, night vision goggles built into the helmet itself!”

“Okay,” said Lucy, “we get it. Now turn on the lights!”

“As you wish.”

And the lights instantly regained power.

“Interesting,” said Atlantis. “Of no doubt, we would like to study this toy more closely.”

“Yeah,” said Eddie, “maybe MJ-13 lost that goofy bonnet when he was out hiking in the desert.” Crossbones shrugged. “I say give him a chance.”

Dr. Atlantis looked at Lucy Hell.

“I’m just not so much into the whole scary darkness thing.”

Eddie laughed. “This from the girl who’s been to Hell and back.”

“Hello,” she said, “I already told you. ‘Hell’ is a shopping mall.”

[Editor's note: See Lucy Hell's comic book for the amazing details!]

“All right, all right,” said Atlantis, “looks like two yes votes and one no, but we wish you well. The rest is up to society.”

“Thank you for your time,” said Aswad Rogers aka Black Rogers. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to share with you the Moroccan helmet of many moons, and may I also say: I can get satellite radio on this thing, cellular phone, and high speed Internet!”
