AGENTS OF KARMA!

EPISODE 004: SILENCE

You might think judging is easy business. Lucy Hell could tell you differently. Not only did frustration and disappointment follow differences of opinion – there was danger to consider.

We don’t know these people, she thought. That “Bulletproof” guy was evidence enough of that. Who knows what crazy power might erupt out of the mind of a mutant or the mad desire of a scientist thinking crookedly?

Well, some comfort in having Dr. Nixon Nemo [aka Dr. Atlantis] and the skeleton man [Eddie Crossbones] up here, I suppose, and Nixon isn’t bad looking …

The voice of Agent Yuki Yoko Yoshimoto interrupted Devilgirl’s thoughts:

“The next applicant has chosen not to speak. She will not be answering any questions verbally.”

“Great,” said Eddie, “these would-be crime fighters wanna sign up for the most dangerous job on Earth, but they’re shy.”

If Eddie Crossbones could see Agent Yoshimoto he would witness a deadly glare as she spoke.

“In addition,” she said, “Silence, as she is called, would like to make it known in advance that she has the power to make boys cry.”

“Oh, yeah!” said Lucy. “I hope she’s pretty.”

The doors opened and Silence walked into the room.

Young and pretty. Big beautiful eyes. And cool clothes.

“I like her,” said Lucy. “I say yes.”

The men hesitated. Certainly not enough to look interesting and say you have a unique power, these things must be accurately tested and measured before you even had a chance of becoming a junior member of the Society, let alone a full-fledged Agent of Karma.

Dr. Atlantis has seen many strange things in his travels across the seven seas; outlandish creatures, eccentric inhabitants, and outright monsters that most people would not believe, but the power to bring men to tears, never had he witnessed that ability. However, there was a siren off the coast of Bermuda that came close.

Even though he currently wore his bubble helmet, containing a classified elemental mix of air and water … he did feel something. This man who had stared down a great white shark – face to face – underwater, this man who had wrestled a giant squid and lived to tell the tale – now felt something matchless to his experience. No amount of stoicism or bravery could hold back the emotion swelling inside his own body. He felt overwhelmed, moved, driven to tears …

“Yes,” said Dr. Nemo, “I think we have someone very special here.”

Eddie sighed. “Well, that’s good, Doc, cuz another few seconds and you would see phantom tears flooding this place. I say yes, too.”

“Totally,” said Lucy. “That’s three yes votes, and I hope the rest of the Society votes for you as well.”

Silence remained silent, but an unmistakable look of confidence crossed her face with just a hint of a smile.
