COMIC-CON 2008: A MYSTERY ISLAND REVIEW!
Bradley Mason Hamlin
Review by Bradley Mason Hamlin
The first highlight of our adventure to the San Diego Comic-Con this year began when Dirk almost lost the Secret Society paperwork needed to get through the airport …
After getting grilled by security, etc., Dirk found his missing documents and we made it onto the plane.
The highlight of the plane ride came in form of Dirk's secret identity getting blown by a male "flight attendant" who recognized Dirk's alter ego as Peter Noone aka Herman from the British Invasion band Herman's Hermits. Unfortunately, we were told airplane peanuts were only available at night time … However, luckily for us, the male stewardess, a “fan” of Herman’s gave him a wink and covertly tossed a bag with several packs of airplane peanuts into Herman’s lap …
As we tried to off-board the plane the happy attendant sang: “I’m Henry the 8th I am, Henry the 8th I am, I am …”
And we thought Comic-Con was going to be strange.
Anyway, we got to the show with no further complications and began soaking in all the crazy unique goodness that is Comic-Con.
Wonder Woman shined brightly in all shapes, curves, and sizes.
Female "DC Comics" characters dominated the floor this year ...
From left to right we have: Supergirl, Raven, Poison Ivy, Plastic Woman, Zatanna, and Green Lantern.
Black Canary bought a hot pretzel ...
... and gained enough weight to warrant protection from Black Lightning and Black Lantern.
Meanwhile, I met two of my lifetime heroes ...
... the Sleestak from Land of the Lost and Big Boy himself from Bob's Big Boy.
Another thrill was meeting up with Ramona Fraden--the greatest Aquaman artist of all time--and co-creator of Aqualad!
[Interview with Ramona forthcoming ...]
We also ran into that glorious Go-Go's girl, Jane Wiedlin and did an on-the-spot interview which will be available on Mystery Island shortly. Stay tuned ...
