BADTIME CHARLIE of
A LUCY HELL interview for MYSTERY ISLAND MUSIC
October 2008
LUCY: Hi Charlie! How did you end up banging the war drums for The Scariest Band in the World?
CHARLIE: It was just my bad luck I suppose, and some other guys drug habit may have may have come into play ...
LUCY: What kind of drums do you play and why?
CHARLIE: I play 3 drums and one cymbal and stand up to avoid falling asleep so if I can abuse someone else's kit and not have to carry in, or have the Hippy carry in my 3 pieces I will. As far as a brand of drums, I'll play the first brand that offers me free kits.

LUCY: Why is Badtime Charlie so bad?
CHARLIE: Didn't ya hear what happened to Good Time Charlie? It don't pay to be a nice guy anymore ...
LUCY: You haven’t been in prison since 2000. What are you doing wrong?
CHARLIE: There is nothing Glamorous about The Joint and I am in no hurry to get back there.
LUCY: Yeah, and there's no Deadbolt girls there. Tell us about your childhood. Were you a good little boy?
CHARLIE: I started eatin pussy at 7, same year as I started drinkin and smokin and I was in Rehab by the time I was 15, the same year I decided I was not going to be president and dropped out of school.
LUCY: Did you ever carry a metal lunchbox to school? If so, which one?

CHARLIE: Evel Knievel.
LUCY: Cool. Tell us a scary Deadbolt story.
CHARLIE: I saw Cockeye naked.
LUCY: That does sound scary. Are you looking forward to your 2008 trip to Germany?
CHARLIE: Absolutely. After the 2002 Deadbolt tour to Europe I quit the band and stayed there for 2 and a half years ... I have not been back since my return to the states over 3 years ago.
LUCY: What are you going to wear for your Halloween show in San Diego?
CHARLIE: Zulu.
LUCY: Tell us about Charlie and the Valentine Killers.
CHARLIE: C & the VK's is my big band project that I am fronting: fiddle, mandolin, bagpipes, banjo, big guitars, pussy. It's a big show that a lot have people said takes them back to the early 70s to a moment when Springsteen was almost cool.
LUCY: Almost, maybe. You fronted Custom Made Scare, didn’t you? Tell us about that.
CHARLIE: That's how I wound up in Deadbolt. Yeah Custom was fun, then Harley Called.
LUCY: Your favorite Deadbolt song is?
CHARLIE: "Conductor," "Wichita," "Spine Back."
LUCY: Tell us how Jack Daniels influences your band.
CHARLIE: One of few influences that keep me in the band business.
LUCY: Who in Deadbolt is the most in love with Jewel Kilcher?
CHARLIE: I'd say that would be 3rd Degree. I think he did time for stalking her at the grease pit she was waitressing at some time ago.
LUCY: Poor boy. What’s your favorite scary movie?
CHARLIE: It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.
LUCY: Yay, I just watched that. What else would you like to tell the world about Badtime Charlie?
CHARLIE: He is very well endowed and has a very giving soul.
LUCY: Thank you, Charlie. This was for sure one of my favorite interviews. You are, like, totally awesome.
